Mediterranean Meets Prairie

A collaborative effort brings a couple’s dream to reality. The Mariani design team met extensively with the homeowners, the architect, various energy experts and the interior designer for this Italianate-style home to blend its classical design with native elements of the surrounding landscape.

It was very important to the homeowners that beauty and function co-exist. Working alongside the home’s architect, the landscape architect designed and coordinated the landscape installation around a geothermal energy grid, which greatly reduces the home’s energy costs.

The couple desired a tranquil outdoor space for entertaining so the team connected the landscape with the home’s architecture. The design seamlessly transitions from the interior of the home to the outdoors. Locally sourced limestone, designed in a two-tone pattern, is used throughout the property and complements the home’s architecture.

From the formal entry flanked by custom-built Versailles boxes, to the rear of the property with its dining area, vegetable garden and fire pit, the landscape is both beautiful and creatively functional.

A pergola defines an outdoor dining room, and fresh vegetables can be handpicked from the adjacent vegetable garden. Also just steps away is a potted herb garden.

The pond’s shoreline, restored with plants indigenous to the Illinois wetland, creates the perfect backdrop for a gas fire pit at the edge of the limestone patio.

Through detailed project planning and design, the team’s collaboration across the entire process created a European inspired landscape that is exquisite and mindful of the environment.
