Country Gardens Bloom
ILCA Gold Award — Residential Design and Construction
The ability to enjoy the Lake Michigan view was uppermost in the minds of the clients, when a gracious home and extraordinary gardens were created in Glencoe. Mariani maximized both view and privacy, and won the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association Gold Award for design/build.
The owners were clear about their preferences from the early planning and contributed valuable knowledge. The first challenge was conquering the erosion of the lake bluff. This required an elaborate drainage system and bluff renovation. Weeds and thistle were removed, and erosion-control plants such as rugosa roses, butterfly flowers and daylilies that would not hinder the owners’ views were installed.
Plants were selected to reflect the sizable architectural scale of the house, yet not obstruct the lake view. Seat walls create intimacy while in scale with the home. The swimming pool was built just four steps from the patio. A garden wall with perennials on both sides provides privacy and definition. A pastel palette of flowers, herbs and strolling gardens complete this handsome property.See Slideshow
