Design PORTFOLIO:

A Grand Restoration

The influences for this landscape design clearly come from the prairie, the owners being passionate about the Illinois native prairie landscape. The landscape architects embraced this 10-acre homestead to create a dramatic living environment, with natural materials and native plantings, that met the needs of the homeowners lifestyle. The existing terrain was perfect, offering a babbling brook running through an oak savanna that transitioned to open rolling fields.

Landscape design concepts were shape around the home, with much collaboration. With careful planning of views a natural landscape surrounding the home with additional stylized, functional garden rooms pleased everyone. Planned views to and from the residence take advantage of the restored woodlands and meadow while the garden rooms are nestled into the terrain and screened from the residence.

Plants were chosen to accent the architecture, blend in and enhance the woods, and survive continual deer pressure. The entire plant palette took several seasons of trial and error to perfect.

Nine feet of the hillside was carved away to nestle the pool into the surrounding topography. The grade change necessitated terraced limestone outcroppings, custom selected. The pool area itself has a waterfall under which one can swim, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit.

Careful thought was given to the walking trails through the woods and prairie, offering clearings, views to the stream, and informal allees of quaking aspen, that appear to be a natural part of the landscape.
