Early Summer:
An Ideal Time for a Garden Makeover

Now that summer is near, it is a great time to make new garden plans, according to Mariani Landscape client representative Jen Quandt. "Early summer presents an idea chance to take a stroll through your garden and look for areas that are lacking in flower power," she says. Consider perennial favorites such as Foxglove, Garden Phlox, Poppies, Delphiniums or the timeless Daisy. Well-placed annuals are great bed complements in a perennial garden. Classics such as Verbena bonariensis, Cleome, Cosmos, Angelonia or Snapdragons intensify the color in your beds.

Perhaps your garden has been established several years; it may be ready for a little "garden rehab". A perennial garden needs to be divided every few years to keep the plants healthy, appropriately spaced and flowering to their fullest. "I like to think of this process as an opportunity to Ôrearrange the furniture' and add some new pieces to the mix," says Quandt.
