Seasonal Foliage
Helenium autumnale (shown below right)
Helenium autumnale - or “The Sneezeweeds,” as they are called—produce masses of charming, brightly colored daisies in the early fall garden. They come in varying heights, colors and bloom times. An early blooming variety, Moerheimii, has dark copper flowers and blooms in June. The other varieties bloom in September in shades of red, yellow and coppery orange.
Aster “Alma Potschke” (shown below right)
Another classic fall perennial is the New England aster. “Alma Potschke” is one of the most satisfactory varieties. Always reliable, it forms a neat 3-foot rounded plant. The deep rose flowers cover the plant for about three weeks beginning in mid-September. It combines beautifully in form and color with tall fall grasses.
