Just west of Chicago, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare commissioned Mariani Landscape to design a series of courtyard healing gardens for its newly completed healthcare facility. “Healing gardens represent much more than just materials and plantings, it’s a chance to really think about the space, how people interact with it and invest meaning in it,” says landscape architect Shannon Mitchell.

The garden, divided to include both formal and natural spaces, will accommodate a variety of users: a cancer garden will feature benches and statues for reflection; a heart health garden with open areas will offer the opportunity for aerobic exercise and yoga; and a children’s garden will have brightly colored statues and marbles that double as groundcover and toys. Construction in scheduled to be completed in 2010.
