Mariani Landscape Honored by ILASLA for “Hope for the Healing Planet” Design Exhibit
Mariani Landscape has been recognized with an Honor Award in Communications by the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for its design exhibit “Hope for the Healing Planet” at the 2009 Chicago Flower and Garden Show. The award will be formally presented to Mariani Landscape at the ILASLA Annual Awards Dinner on December 4 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. Each year, ILASLA celebrates the year’s most inspired and noteworthy landscape architecture from its 500-plus members.
“Mariani Landscape is honored to receive this distinction from ILASLA,” says Design Manager and Marketing Director Carrie Woleben-Meade. “The goal of the landscape design exhibit was to provide an example to the public of how you can create a beautiful and sustainable landscape. With more than 50,000 attendees, the 2009 Flower and Garden Show was the perfect place to showcase the exhibit and educate people.”
Produced in conjunction with the Chicago Botanic Garden, the exhibit featured a 4,400-square-foot garden with unique pebble flooring, circular rooftop gardens, native plant materials and decking constructed from farm-harvested hardwood. Visitors were educated on methods of rainwater recycling management and the importance of green gardening plans.
“It’s important to use locally grown plants in your landscape,” says Meade. “Locally grown plants are easier on the environment because you don’t have the pollution associated with transportation.” The exhibit featured a display of more than 4,500 plants and those walking throughout the exhibit were treated to an elegant arrangement of perennials and other colorful greenery. Plants were sourced or grown locally and included eastern redbud, royal fern, purple fountain grass, Gold Tides Forsythia, Dwarf Korean Lilac, Green Cascade Maple and Black Mondo Grass. Minimal annuals were incorporated into the landscape to encourage people to use more sustainable, lower maintenance perennial plant combinations.
Mariani Landscape has gained a reputation in Illinois for its landscape design, installation and maintenance services. Mariani consistently wins awards from ILASLA and the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA). In 2008, Mariani strengthened its efforts to incorporate eco-friendly principles into its business practices. These efforts are positioning Mariani Landscape to the forefront of environmentally sound, sustainable practices. “We’re taking a sustainable approach to landscape design and construction by creating landscapes that are beautiful, require less artificial care and incorporate native plants,” says Woleben-Meade.
